EUROPIA -Europe tomorrow - looking at the present for an improvement in the future

As part of celebrating the European Year of Citizens 2013, our project aims at familiarizing students with the idea of citizenship, also encouraging them to create an ideal city. They are to be acquainted with alternative city concepts and social experiments seen in the light of justice, education and equality.

Aims and Work Process:In Module 1 students are to get to know each other, writing a short piece about themselves. Particular emphasis will be given on hobbies, favourite books, movies. They will also be asked to choose a "symbol" that will represent them.
In Module 2, they are to present their partners with their visions of a future ideal society covering various fields, such as forms of government, justice, labour and employment, transportation, economics, education and science, integration and equality, etc.

In Module 3, philosophy and literature will come into play; Plato’s "Politeia", George Orwell’s "1984" are two examples of Utopian and Dystopian societies respectively. Students are going to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these “regimes”, as seen in the aforementioned books, as well as films, songs and paintings dealing with these issues.

In Module 4, –the most important part of the project,– students will work together with their European partners to design their own social Utopia. This will include discussion on how to improve certain areas of civic life, with the aim of reaching an agreement on a democratic process for the society they will plan. The outcome of their work, the creation of a social Utopia, should include a meaningful name and a poster presenting the above information. At this stage, the students will deal out the task, deciding which aspects of the project will be assigned to which [[#|partner]] schools.

In Module 5, students will choose a city in their own country, discussing various stages of its development through time. For example, Athens may be seen as a Classical Greek city state, a Roman city, the capital of a new state, a sprawling mega-city, a sustainable city. The aim is to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of their city development through time and raise their awareness on active citizenship
